Paul graduated with a first class honours degree in botany from the University of Bristol in 1981. He went on to gain a PhD in vascular plant systematics. Following his academic work, in 1990 he became a full-time ecological consultant, dealing with large scale ecological impact assessments.
Paul has studied the flora of the UK for over 30 years, covering sites from the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall to the Keen of Hamar in north Shetland. Currently based in the Cotswolds, he now carries out botanical work throughout the UK and teaches on issues relating to ecological impact assessment and mitigation for the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol.
